Smart Sense use Martin Audio to Transform Church
Posted on: 22nd May 2024
Steve Topliss started Smart Sense in 2011 having already worked in the audio-visual industry for seventeen years. With one of their areas of work specialising in Church sound reinforcement, a house of worship near Nottingham approached them.
Having worked with the electrical contractor previously, the Church approached them again needing a solution to their current AV setup as part of a redesign and overhaul of the Church’s main worship space. They had a piecemeal system, which meant fault finding was difficult and illogical, and volunteers often struggled to work successfully with the system.
While mainly for speech reproduction, the system also had to cope with a small live group of musicians who played at each service. Smart Sense needed a system to sound balance and cope with low-level bass guitar as well as voice and instruments such as flute, violin, acoustic guitar and keyboard. Simple operation and flexibility along with intelligibility were key.
As well as the day-to-day practicalities of a new AV system, the aesthetics of the system were a key consideration, as the worship space was a truly multi-use space, and would be used for coffee mornings, children’s play groups, youth clubs, wedding receptions, and so on.
The choice of Martin Audio CDD5’s and CDD10 speakers was one of very few contenders who offered a decent size cabinet in a white unobtrusive design while including point source technology for low and high frequencies. The Martin Audio SX112 compact subs, also available in white, was perfect! Offering a discreet, full range system, without having to find places for huge ugly black boxes. As an ultra-compact direct radiating sub-bass system, the SX112 could extend the bandwidth and increase the headroom on their CDD speaker; perfect for when they have the band in.
“The project was on a tight timescale as the date for a Church member's wedding had already been set. Fortunately, the good stock levels at Leisuretec meant the speakers were available without a lead time, whereas other manufacturers had long lead times for their products, specifically those in white.” Commented Smart Sense owner, Steve Topliss.
As well as the audio system, Smart Sense also installed video switching to allow internal displays, overflow screens in the other rooms, internal PTZ cameras, and a live stream.
The whole package was delivered on time and the client has been pleased with the system, with one member of the Church’s team specifically commenting on how pleased they were with the look, sound, and unobtrusiveness of the speakers.
