The new EVOLVE G2 Column Loudspeakers from Electro-Voice bring a range of updates and improvements to the popular EVOLVE series. From increased output and an updated design to improved connectivity and a new full-colour LCD display, the G2 models introduce several new features while building on the success of their predecessors.

In this blog, we take a closer look at the new EVOLVE G2 range and explore the key features and upgrades.

Introducing the EVOLVE G2 Range

The new EVOLVE G2 series consists of the EVOLVE 30M G2, EVOLVE 50 G2 and EVOLVE 50M G2. These models feature the same size transducers as the previous models, with the 30M G2 featuring a 10” subwoofer with 6 x 2.8” HF drivers, and the 50 and 50M G2 featuring a 12” subwoofer with 8 x 3.5” HF drivers.

Like their predecessors, all G2 models are available in black or white, so no matter your venue aesthetics, these systems should look right at home.

The naming of the models is also consistent with their predecessors, with the M versions featuring a similar 8-channel mixer at the rear of the subwoofer.

With the additions made last year, the EVOLVE family now consists of the EVOLVE 30M G2, 50 G2, 50M G2 and the larger EVOLVE 70 and EVOLVE 90. We’ve already covered the two larger models in a separate breakdown, which you can check out here.

Updated Design and Increased Output

Starting with the overall finish, the new G2 models have been remodelled to give a sleeker look, while also featuring improved robustness and portability thanks to the updated carry handles, similar to those found on the EVOLVE 70 and 90.

The new G2 models also benefit from increased output, with both sizes boasting a 2 dB increase in maximum SPL compared to their predecessors. This brings the maximum SPL to 125 dB on the EVOLVE 30M G2 and an impressive 129 dB on the EVOLVE 50 and 50M G2.

They also feature Electro-Voice’s patented waveguide, which provides 120° x 40° coverage to ensure consistent output across your venue.

Inputs and Connectivity

When it comes to inputs, the G2 models will feel familiar, featuring the same combo XLR/jack inputs, RCA stereo input and 3.5 mm jack. There’s also a Hi-Z input for connecting a guitar directly to the subwoofer, as well as a footswitch input.

QuickSmart Link

One of the key additions to the new range is QuickSmart Link, now available across all G2 models. This feature was previously introduced with the EVOLVE 50M, meaning the older 30M and 50 missed out, so it’s great to see it included across all the new models.

QuickSmart Link allows you to combine two EVOLVE systems via a simple Ethernet cable. In the case of the mixer variants, this essentially doubles your available inputs.

Once linked, you can pair both systems to a single mobile device via the QuickSmart Mobile app, giving you full mix control of both systems. This is particularly useful for larger applications that require additional sound coverage and inputs.

Switchable 48 V Phantom Power

Users of condenser microphones will also appreciate another new feature. On the older models, the XLR inputs were limited to always-on 15 V phantom power. The G2 models, however, feature switchable 48 V phantom power.

This means you’re no longer limited to the same range of microphone options when using EVOLVE. The switchable feature is also a useful addition, allowing you to turn the electrical current off on channels that don’t require 48 V, making it ideal for mixed microphone setups.

Bluetooth 5.0 and True Wireless Stereo

Another upgrade to the new models is Bluetooth connectivity. All G2 models feature Bluetooth 5.0 input, as well as TWS, or True Wireless Stereo.

True Wireless Stereo allows you to connect two speakers of the same model to a single Bluetooth device. For example, if you had two EVOLVE 30M G2s in a venue, you could pair the speakers together, connect your phone to one of them and play audio through both.

This is a really useful feature, as it means you don’t need to run additional cables between the two systems if you simply want to play music through them.

The New Full-Colour LCD Display

Another noticeable upgrade to the G2 models is the larger, full-colour LCD display. What was once a compact display has been upgraded to a fully featured interface, allowing you to intuitively adjust the levels of each output using the on-screen faders.

The new display also makes it much easier to navigate the speakers’ menus and settings, giving you quick and easy access to the controls you need. And, if you happen to have some downtime, you can even play a game of Pong!

The updated display also introduces the ability to lock the screen with a PIN code, giving you peace of mind knowing your setup is safe from accidental changes.

Alongside this, the units can now receive OTA (over-the-air) updates via the QuickSmart app, making it easier to access the latest features and firmware upgrades.

Additional Features and Built-In Processing

The G2 models also include Automatic Feedback Suppression, Ducking, input presets, and additional built-in EQ and FX.

These features make the new models ideal for users who want to focus on their performance without needing to know the ins and outs of audio mixing.

Accessories for the EVOLVE G2 Models

The new G2 models come with a carry bag for the column speaker and spacers, with different options depending on the model.

With the smaller EVOLVE 30M G2, you get a handy backpack that can hold the spacers and speaker section, along with a convenient front pocket for storing your cables.

With the EVOLVE 50 and 50M G2, you get a padded shoulder bag for carrying the column and spacers.

Dedicated slipcovers are also available for the G2 subwoofers, although these need to be purchased separately.

If you’re a previous EVOLVE 30 or 50 user, you’ll be happy to know that some existing accessories are compatible with the new G2 models. This includes items such as the wheeled transport cases and the EVOLVE50-PL-S short poles.

Final Thoughts

EVOLVE G2 represents a welcome upgrade to the immensely popular EVOLVE range, using feedback from real Electro-Voice users to create a system that can benefit a wide range of applications and environments.

With an updated design, increased output, improved connectivity and a more intuitive display, the new models build on their predecessors while introducing a range of useful features and improvements.
